Adventures in healthcare - USA edition
I've been on an interesting journey, trying to work in the school system here in PA. Even a part time job working with kids requires a lot, in any state.
I had to get a physical and TB test. Quickly. So I hit up the minute clinic at a CVS. I immediately judged this, thinking how sad it is to go to a doctor in a freakin convenience store. But I'll tell ya, I got in the following morning. The nurses were so sweet and helpful, there was no wait, and it was (relatively) affordable.
The TB test came back positive (I don't have tuberculosis, no worries, it's been a thing since I was a kid) so next plan of action is to get a chest X-ray. Awesome.
I head to a clinic close by and they tell me an X-ray will cost $700, but they'll take 40% off if I pay in full on the spot. It took everything I had not to cry right then and there.
This is the shit i so dread about this country. This is why I was so reluctant to move back. So, of course, I went to Dunkin' Donuts and ate my feelings, contemplating another trip to France. Which would be cheaper than that $700 bill.
I did some research and happened upon incredibly helpful women who walked me through everything. I was sent to a U Penn affiliated hospital where I walked in, and was greeted with a smile. I paid $55, waited in a super comfortable room, ambient music in the background. Got the xray, facilitated by two very friendly soon to be doctors, and left. All within 30 minutes.
I wouldn't want to break my leg without insurance great in this country. And buying even 'decent' insurance is the most depressing thing ever. It's a fucked up system for the most part. They dont make it easy if you don't have a corporation behind you. So if you're on your own, like moi, this is a tough and very scary situation.
But I gotta say, the healthcare system seemed to have my back on this, along with compassionate humans, great facilities & a little jazz. I took this picture right after I left because the relief was so great and i felt so lucky. Never in a million years would I expect to write a post like this.
(Thanks Obama.)
